X-treme Najem wins fourth Bondi Barefoot!

29th September 2017

The Bondi Barefoot is one of our favourite events on our annual soft sand running calender. This year we were greeted to a cracking but windy day. The famous Bondi sand was sqeeeky soft. The scene was set for a brutal early season hit out for our beach team. Ali Najem was again the favourite to take out the 10km event, having won it for the past three years. However, this year saw a really solid field turn out on the day - one that included the 2017 Australian 2km champion. The average age of our female representatives had also appeared to be cut in half this year, with the likes of Melissa Campbell "retiring". Still, our youngsters were more than ready to fill these sandy footsteps. Here's what happened:

Ali Najem ran a smart race, conserving energy through the middle stages in a tight leading pack before opening up with 500m to go to win the 10km crown comfortably again.

Annika Durante announced herself as one to watch out for in both open and age-group levels this year by winning the women's 4km event, with Jess Phelps hot on her heels 2nd. Returning JA coach and former world 2km champion Dee Cooper came third, whilst young upstart Sienna Alderson came 5th and an obvious first in her agegroup. Importantly, Sienna also smashed her father in the same event!

Greer Calabro came 3rd in women's bolt.

Jesse Thus 6th in men's bolt.

Endurance athlete come surf club runner DJ ran well for 11th overall and 3rd in age group. DJ then donned a 30kg weight vest to compete in the 100kg sprint... as you do!

X-treme Najem then talked himself into the celebrety race, which he won. To finish the day off, Ali came 2nd in the men's bolt.
